Ethiopia You can drive for hours through rural Ethiopia and the only signs of life will be the ageing mules and horses standing in the middle of the road, as if daring the oncoming trucks to put an end to their days. Far from the road, in motley collections of handmade straw huts, the people of the Rift Valley live virtually untouched by the modern world. Fifteen year-old Addisa Debala lives with her brother and sister in the tiny village of Jurayau, in the Koka region south of Addis Ababa. She has lived in the same mud-walled hut since the day she was born. Her father raises cattle and chickens on two acres of rough land. Addisa helps with the maize crop and - like so many African children - spends hours arranging fresh tomatoes into pyramids, for sale at the side of the road. |
