Mozambique Fourteen years after the end of Mozambique's civil war, in which a million people died from fighting and famine, landmines still threaten the lives of many rural dwellers. The government has set 2009 as the deadline for clearance of all minefields, with a total of 506 suspected hazardous areas yet to be swept. For these children on the shores of the Indian Ocean near Maputo, nothing could be further from their minds. A few miles to the south lies Maputo's industrial port, with its rusting tankers and decrepit wharves. But this is Costa da Sol, a resort waiting to happen. Its wide-open beaches are just like the kids playing in the water: unspoilt in every sense of the word. |
