Namibia

An endless expanse of sand. Cascading white dunes as far as the eye can see. The spectacular desert runs all the way to the shores of the Atlantic. Namibia is the first country in the world to incorporate the protection of the environment into its constitution.

But its inhabitants are not immune to the familiar scourges of Africa. In a country two thirds the size of neighbouring South Africa, only one per cent of its land mass can be used for crops. Of its population of a mere two million, 60% live on less than $2 a day and more than 22% are now infected with HIV.

While an increasing portion of the nation's budget has been earmarked for education, there is still a chronic lack of schools, teachers and books, and most of its existing schools are without electricity or running water.
